Virtual Trial Room: Trial and purchase clothes, accessories, footwear and more, Virtually

Hi All

My Name is Rajmohan Pillai (Raj). I am currently based in Dubai, where since January I am offering consulting services in Mobility/Technology/Marketing. At the same time I have been working around a few ideas that can be turned into products/solutions. I am introducing one such here for comments, feedback and possible investments.

The idea is to develop a solution that will help customers at retail and online touch points, virtually try out clothes to aid their purchase decision. Most of us might have gone to retail outlets and have gone through the experience of trying out different clothes/designs that we like before coming to a purchase decision. When online, we hesitate from buying a shirt or a gown etc simply because we are not sure if it will fit accurately (a size 42 for one retailer may be different from size 42 for another; but then that is just one of the issues – what if your sleeves are longer that you expected…and so on).

The solution will help customers to save time, bring more convenience and make the experience more interactive and fun. It will help Brands and retailers save costs, reduce returns, increase customer satisfaction, understand them better and hence more profits.

I have attached a brief deck as an introduction to the concept. I am looking for investment, to help me turn this idea into a full fledged product.

  1. Hi Raj,

Please check fitiquette. It was acquired by myntra 7 months ago I guess. Its a 3d modelling application to try out apparels or footwear.

  2. Hello Raj, I have seen this thing being done for sunglasses/eyewear on many sites. They let you upload your photo (face) so you can see how the glasses would look. But it generally never solves the purpose due to scale issues. Can you solve this scaling problem? To give you an example, just like you said, every brand will have a different size 42″ shirt. Then some would be slim fits while some are too huge. Can you do something like creating a model file for every user which would be like a one-time created online avatar with the exact specs of the user (shirt size or maybe shoulder length)? So everytime i login to try a new shirt, I would just upload my avatar and see how the shirt fits – that would give me a pretty accurate picture of how the shirt looks.

  3. Hi Raj,

Looks like you are looking to delve into the field of Virtual Reality : Augmented Reality

    MUMBAI AUGMENTED REALITY

Marvelous Designer Software is the application which could be helpful to you as well, as already pointed out about Fitiquette by Anoop, should work for your requirement as well too.

Since you are in Dubai you should be able to connect with Fractal Systems and check these above videos for a reference.

    Hope this helps!! Cheers!!

  4. Hi,

Your presentation talks more from a biz point of view than the value addition you are offering to the consumer in terms of saving the hassles of changing clothes in a tiny, non-AC trial room.

People try clothes not only to see how it looks on them but also to FEEL THE FIT. How do you intend to ensure this works fine? For eg: size 42 is shoulder size but for someone with a paunch, this won’t hold true, right?

  5. Thank you Anup. I did go through their information available. Very similar.

  6. Dear Rajat, thank you for your inputs. As mentioned in the earlier post by Anup, our aim is to solve this using 3D modelling and simulation. This is as far as apparels are concerned. In case of eyewear it will be a simpy wear and see kind of an experience from a catalogue. Improvements can be made here also. Right now I have not spent much thought for that category. The aim is to focus on garments in Phase 1 unless dictated otherwise by the market later,

  7. Thank you Darshan. Will check these out.

  8. Thank you Amit

The deck I have put up here is a topline summary. Slide 4 mentions this benefit, bt I think it isn’t clearly coming through. Thanx for the suggestion.

To make the customer get a feel of the real life experience, one way is to simulate this experience using imaging/sensors that can capture your profile. This will account for the variations in shapes and sizes.

  9. Hi Raj,
Please explain why will a retailer use this?

  10. Sure Anoop. If I just list a few of these (1) make shopping a more involving and fun experience (2) reduce direct and indirect costs (eg: staff time, logistics, inventory etc..) (3) build knowledge of your customer preference.

  11. Hi Raj,

Please find some documents which might be helpful for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYpxpgyCcns – Cisco Augmented Reality @ retail fitting rooms. A demo of new technology from Cisco that allows shoppers to try on clothes via augmented reality, all enabled by interactive digital signage.

As these documents say and going through the internet, US and other countries are trying out these concepts like virtual reality and augmented reality. The future of retailing is consumer adaptive retailing. With online shopping gaining considerable significance, the technological impact could be more. The driving factors for consumers will be range, price, service and convenience because they have high expectations which we need to maintain to be successful. I remember reading US retailers trying out concepts like this where a customer using virtual trial rooms. They can try out with different colors, designs with just a mouse click. This is an in store concept which i think can be adapted to online too.  They also used real time interactions like customers can post it to the social networks and get real time feedback’s of their new attire. This could be more associated with augmented reality where the research is going on. But i hope this could be the future of shopping whether its online or offline.

  12. Thank you Krishna

This a great piece of insight and information. I had earlier gone through the CISCO offering. Try Live, didn’t know about them before. Really grateful for this post.
