Are Business Functions in Online Media and E-Commerce Companies qualitatively different to those in Traditional companies?

Are functions in internet/ecommerce/online media companies actually different to those in traditional companies?  How in your opinion do these companies define their core and strategic functions?

 

I am trying to get to the bottom of how online companies define themselves.  How they configure their resources, capabilities and people into FUNCTIONS or departments that are responsible for addressing the operatiional imperatives of the company business stratagey.

 

Its likely that we would all agree that online companies are structured differently.  The question I have is what are these functions called?  Has a nomenclature for emerged that is understood by all concerned?

 

It is likely that functions in online companies correspond to traditionally labelled functions like Finance,Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain etc.  But can we distinguish the nature of these functions in the online space to bring out the specific nature of the work conducted by people in these functions?

 

Can we collectovely take a crack at articulating these functions?  In terms of a label and a one sentence description.  Could be helpful to many an entreprenuer.

 

I am working on an HR venture that will find this info very useful so your inputs are much appreciated.
