Buffer App, Mention, Klout and AirWoot are my goto solutions.

I would highly recommend HootSuite; extremely robust & free solution (even the paid version is not expensive). Following are good for performing smaller, individual tasks & all are either free or have a trial period: ManageFlitter, FollowerWonk, Twellow, WeFollow, Mention, JustUnfollow, SocialOomph, SocialBro, CrowdBooster, SocialBakers (for reports), BuzzStream etc. The most robust tool (paid) is Simply Measured.

A lot also depends on your needs. For E commerce, it is better to go for a complete solution like HootSuite rather than relying on lots of free individual tools. Also, if you are using MailChimp for Emailers, it makes sense to buy their social plugin to track your Email Subscribers on social media & engage with them.

I would say HootSuite is the best bet. I’m by no means an expert, but I use HootSuite and it works for me. I am not very good with social media. I tend to be active for some time and then disappear altogether. I like it that they let me schedule posts for different social networking sites.
