India too Social – Affects Productivity?

India too Social?

As Indians, we are always very proud of our Socializing skills- especially at a personal level. To the extent that it is taken as a measure of a person’s Quality!

< Women tell me that they would definitely like to go out with a more ‘Social guy’ >

Many a times I’ve heard my relatives and friends , who’ve lived in India and abroad comment about How its much nicer in India as we interact more and communicate the smallest things with each other, while the Americans are stuck in their apartments and don’t mingle unless you’re great pals!

I’ve personally worked at a great IT company and interacted with teams in Russia, US, France, Malaysia and Ireland and without doubt you notice that they seem to be more ‘Work-oriented’ than us!

A 9 to 6 Job in India!

A normal day at an Indian office would definitely have 3-4 Coffee Breaks, sometimes cribbing about the ‘raise’ but most times wondering what’s the Best movie to watch this weekend! A 9 hour job never remains a 9 hour job- you stretch into late hours, ‘work Hard’ and possibly believe you are overworked, but the truth is that we just AREN’T efficient enough!!

While the teams abroad (esp Russia and France) are extremely work-centric- clock in those 9 hours and are pretty much effective for atleast 7 of those hours!!

Banning Facebook!

Add to this- the new threat of Facebook, Twitter, Google Talk and a zillion other sites which enables you a peek into not just your colleagues’ lives but also your friends sitting 1000s of kms away! There is definitely an issue of Productivity. Any IT developer complaining about his company banning ‘Facebook in Office’ must realize that it is for your own good and the company’s welfare on a whole!

Facebook Banned

Maybe we Indians must stop Socializing a little while working and stick to the delivery! smile

Well, how did I chance upon this topic? – A close friend of mine (working in Bangalore, yes he is an IT developer) complaining about Facebook being Banned!

What do you think? Does the Indian mentality of Socializing affect productivity in your team/company or not! Add to the comments!
