I always wanted to be an entrepreneur and even while working in my investment banking job, I was always working on developing some or the other idea. A casual conversation with one of my friends from college, led to my joining hands with him and his 2 friends and the idea of MyNewsStudio was born. MyNewsStudio is a rapid learning platform to help students with their career advancement. The application aims to solve the problem of Information Overload by enabling students to quickly build their general awareness and gain confidence to effectively present that information in GDs and PIs. We currently focus on helping CAT aspirants and MBA students prepare for group discussions (GD), personal interviews (PI) and Writing Ability Tests (WAT), as this is a market which we are well aware of (I and another team member are MBA grads and we understand the system).
Why this idea?
As a student preparing for CAT, all my teachers as well as seniors recommended that to prepare for any interview or a group discussion, I should read as much as possible. This would help me form opinions and share my viewpoints in a concise and lucid way. I therefore, subscribed to all major newspapers, but found it too expensive as well as boring to read everything and ended up feeling unprepared. On discussing this with my friends, I found that they also faced the same issue.
I and my team, therefore got the idea to help students manage the Information Overload in a more streamlined way and thus was born MyNewsStudio. To draw a comparison – we are like a Morpheus to your Neo, a Mr. Miyagi to your Daniel, a Dumbledore to your Harry (you get the idea) – Teaching and testing every step of the way.
How do we do it?
We have sat long and thought hard about all the features which will help the students prepare. Each feature before implementation, should answer a yes to the question, “Would I have found this feature useful for my preparation?” So, based on our Yes outcomes, these are some of the main features which make our application:
1. NewsGraphs – We always felt that to completely understand a topic, one needs to know the entire back-story which most of us don’t. We have therefore introduced unique visual essays for thorough analysis of major topics which are quick to read and easy to remember. And needless to say, it is our blockbuster feature
2. News Aggregator – We allow students to create their own personal news channel from over a 100 major news sources. So students can choose to read the economic news from Economic Times while reading the news about India from The Hindu.
3. Clutter free – We all have wounded up on third party sites watching videos as they look much more interesting than news. So we have taken a stand not to introduce ads in order to provide a distraction free reading for students
4. Vocabulary learning – CAT aspirants are tested on their verbal ability for which they need to have a good vocabulary. We have therefore developed the Visual Dictionary to enable them to learn and retain new words through pictures. We have also embedded a dictionary in the news aggregator so that students can look up new words then and there itself.
5. Quiz – We feel that the best way to retain what we have read is by taking small quizzes and keep one on one’s toes. So we have introduced small quizzes on a range of topics and have created scoreboards to measure the students’ performance.
