Emergence of the ReCommerce sector in India – Introduction to Budli.in

Budli (meaning “Exchange” in Hindi) is India’s first instant online Recommerce (Reverse Commerce) Portal, which allows users to sell their used gadgets in a secure, fast, convenient and simple way from the comfort of their home or office in a hassle free manner. We offer an instant price discovery mechanism, free shipment pickup and prompt direct payment to the seller.

What do we do with our used gadgets? We solve this problem by providing a consistent, curated, controlled selling experience which is currently missing. We offer users an simple, easy and convenient way to value and sell their used gadgets instantly from the comfort of their home or office.

We strive to facilitate people to embrace change through the adoption of technologically advanced gadgets by a wider section of society (for example, those who can’t afford) and also handling of these used devices in an environmentally friendly manner. We aspire to create and define the ReCommerce (Reverse Commerce) space in India.

About 100 Million new gadgets of all types are expected to be sold in India. Out of this, about 1 million used smartphones are expected to have been sold in 2013, amounting to over US$100 million. This figure is expected to multiply manifold in the coming years. Currently the space for used gadgets is mainly in the unorganized sector which is going to change with the growth of ReCommerce.  Recommerce of consumer electronics devices is bound to grow exponentially in the coming years.

Estimated market size for used gadgets over Rs.5000 cr. This is mostly in the unorganized sector. India is a price sensitive market – the demand for used gadgets in good working condition is more than supply.

It’s a unique C2B business model. The eCommerce model where the user typically pays the seller and the seller ships the product to him is flipped in ReCommerce where the user ships the product and gets paid for it.

Why we do it?

We enable users to part with their used gadgets in a socially and environmentally responsible manner by providing them a convenient and reliable service which also offers value.

What are we doing?

We allow users to value and sell their used gadgets instantly and directly to us. These devices are then resold through various channels. We also facilitate the monetization of the same and thereafter donate the proceeds to charitable causes.

How it Works

We offer a unique C2B business model where we buy the used gadgets directly from users all over India. There is an option to donate their gadget for charity. The gadgets are monetized and proceeds contributed to a charitable institution

Using a simple 3 step process, anyone can sell their used gadget:

1. Price Quote: Obtain a live instant dynamic price quote for the gadget by choosing the model and selecting specifications, condition, age & accessories included. The system provides an instant live dynamic price quote based on the selections.

2. Shipping: Accept Price Quote, print shipping label and pack the product. It will be picked up from most locations in India free of cost by our logistics partner and shipped to us for inspection.

3. Get Paid: Once the product is checked at our end, payment will be sent  by online bank transfer or cheque within 7 working days of receipt of the device. In case there is any discrepancy in the evaluation of the device, we offer a re-quote or else the product is returned back free of cost. It’s a risk free selling experience.

These Certified Pre-owned devices are resold using various channels.

    Not sure what makes this so different than a … sorry to say kabaadiwala or a quickr or an olx?

  2. We at Budli.in allow users to value and sell their used gadgets instantly and directly to us. Classified Ads are C2C whereas this is a C2B model. Using classified ads, a seller is not sure when the gadget will sell, at what price, the genuinity of the buyer (there are many scams and fake listings as well), etc. The user experience could be good, bad or ugly and is at best YMMV (your mileage may vary). We provide a consistent, controlled, curated selling experience.

    eCommerce focusses on the users buying experience. ReCommerce focusses on the selling experience.

    A large number of users do not want to go through the hassle of creating a listing, waiting for a buyer, etc. because of which old gadgets are lying around somewhere in a drawer losing value, which would ultimately become e-waste. Local dealers offer buy backs usually only when purchasing something new from them and even then the price is inconsistent and varies greatly.

  3. Rohit, reviewed the website. Before I make any comment, I would like to help me selling following products:

    1. Microsoft Wireless Mouse
    2. Couple of Keyboards and Mouse

    No I cannot sell them on your website. So how is your website different where I can only sell product which you have listed. Additionally when you are talking about unorganized market, why should I wait for 1 week to receive the payment when I can receive it instantly from an unorganized market. So what kind of value addition, how is your product different then olx or quickr. The only difference I could see is, you inspecting the product and purchasing them. Then you sell it through unorganized sector. So how do you ensure that my cell phone is not sold to a terrorist. 

    There are 1000 of products, how would you make an automatic price calculator for them. I can understand you can build a price configuration for basic elements, but if you need to add billions of products available in different categories, it might be difficult.

    Now lets take a real example – If I have a smartphone which I try to sell on your website, you offer me 5000/- , but after inspecting you discover that you cannot offer more then 2500, hence I asked you to return the handset. Now few things can happen now.

    1. The handset was damaged by your team.
    2. The cost you incurred in pickup and return of product.
    3. The product is lost in transit by the logistic company – so how do you compensate the customer.

    There could be endless possibilities, so how do you plan to handle these situations.

  4. Currently only certain product categories are accepted at Budli.in – Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops & iPods. These categories would be expanded later on to include peripherals, etc. at a later stage.

    For products not listed on the site, users have an option to Request a quote for their gadget by submitting details at  https://budli.in/request-a-quote and the quote is provided by e-mail.

    We have experienced people technically qualified to handle these devices so chances of damage by our team is negligible. There are processes in place which are monitored to ensure proper handling.
    The pricing algorithm factors in the logistics expense incurred for pickup and the %age of returns. We use a reliable logistics company and have a further transit insurance against possible loss in transit.

    While starting anything new, there are many unknowns. These risks are associated with the opportunities and have to be worked upto to anticipate and minimize to grow the business.
