Feedback: Money as a motivation for keeping an app installed?

Hi everyone,

I am Harshil Lodhi, a final year student from IIT Guwahati. I have just joined the forum so pardon me if I break some of the spoken/unspoken rules of this community. I have been following Alok’s post for the past 2 years and his posts brought me here.

I am working on a start-up with a bunch of my friends and wanted feedback on some of the things.

Context: Indian Market

There seems to be no good platform which connects companies/startups to customers for surveys and feedback especially if the company is concerned about feedback from a certain section of users i.e. based on age or location. ( I would like to know if it exists). We faced a similar problem when we wanted a opinion from public on some of the things but couldn’t find a platform.

SwagBucks, Google Opinion rewards etc are some of the businesses that operate in the same domain but I don’t think they are having an Indian presence.

My Questions:

1. Would you keep a simple app on your phone/tablet which pushes surveys and feedback to you. It would reward you with some nominal amount of money. ( what would be that amount for you ? ).

2. I know these kind of money making apps go viral in their initial phase. What do you guys think of the long term sustainability of such an app. Mcent is one such apps which pays you for installing it. I don’t know how popular it is.

3. What are the tax issues for a company if we want to give out rewards to users? Initially we are planning to only give it in forms of recharge coupons and gift cards.

  1. hey harshil – can u pls add your twitter handle at the end of your post? thanks!

  2. I would have liked an app of this kind when I was a student. Now I don’t usually care about apps which give some re-charge money but I am surprised when my cousins are.

    1- No

2- There has to be added value. Plus if the app has to increase the demography, it has to have more reasons to install than just getting some recharge coupons.

3- Not sure about tax issues.

On another note, doesn’t mCent and some other apps do the same. What is the competition for such an app in market?

  3. Done. But I am not active on twitter.

  4. Thanks for your feedback. We are in process of refining our model. The app is just a part of a bigger business that we are trying to build. I will share about it once we fix upon the details.

mCent is one of the apps but it only has app installs as a way to earn any incentive.

We are more focussed on building a platform where we can bridge the gap between consumers and businesses where this incentive plays its part for attracting users.

  5. Harshil,

Since you are trying to build panel, I would suggest you become a part of market research panels to understand how they engage their panelists.

The following companies have panels in India.

    1. Toluna*

    2. Research Now

    3. Borderless Access

    4. Survey Sampling International

    5. GMI* Light Speed Research*

    * have app to push surveys.

    Thanks,
    -Tarun-
