Ask For Help

just a beginner

Hey everyone,
I am new to this website, just forgive me if you think that I sound idiotic.
I am just 18 and curious to know a lot of things about business.
I am currently doing my Btech in Game Development, I want to have my own studio some day. I just need some basic advice about studies and higher education.
I want to do my master from digipen which is supposed to be the best college for gaming in this world. So my question is for opening a studio, do I really need to do masters, or do I need a management degree or anything else.
How should I start up with a studio in India.
And I dont want to enter in mobile gaming, I want to have a studio which creates console and pc games.

Sorry if i sound too stupid in my questions.

  1. As you are still studying, I feel you should think to make unique game’s with good line up’s. That would attract masses and inturn the revenue generation. Setting up a game studio without a proper game goal would be un ethical and it requires good amount of working capital for human resource and technical hardware.Taken into consideration a successful game should also have good marketing team. India has always been slow adaptive to new games so promotion becomes a major eye snatcher for the audience. Its very hard to be a one man job for setting up a studio

I would recommend tp work and get experience with game publishing studios. Be an expert in game development,Acquire confidence in your self. Identify your start up partners. Identify how and what uniqueness can be added into your game line ups.Experiment with social network gaming apps. Study about the trends. Identify the requirement and taste of Indian audience then think of a bigger project.

  2. Unless its stupid, its not good. What I believe is that you are in a focusing dilemma.

For your first question – Do I need a degree?

To start a business you need to
    1) Shed your ego
    2) Forget everything you know and start from scratch
    3) Learn to be excited about failing and project failures as enthusiastically as you would for successes.
    4) Understand there are few chances for success, so only concentrate on delivering, day in, day out.

Degrees are to impress your parents, girlfriends, FB friends. Knowledge, grit and determination are to impress your inner self.

Do you want to open a studio or do you want to develop games for people? Just build great games and studio will happen. Your statement – “And I don’t want to enter in mobile gaming, I want to have a studio which creates console and pc games.” sounds like you think its no big deal developing mobile games and its not geeky. You are going down the wrong path pal, if that’s your thought process.

So in simple words the first step is to Make games and sell them. You have Steam that can help you publish. Now you have Windows Marketplace too for Windows. Sooner or later you will realize importance of mobile games and then you can develop on Ios or Android.

I used to be a hard code game developer with no relevant background, no training, only Pure passion. So hopefully in few years time I will meet you for some real business.

  3. Hi Anshul,

Go to the Apple Appstore.  There are three categories of products.  Books, Music, and Apps, with GAMES being the number one type of app downloaded.  Take the top 10 songs / books / games in each category and Google whether the author/developer/singer/composer studied a specialized course in that field.  I think not.

To start a studio, you’re going to need a portfolio of games.  Build a Angry Birds / Cut The Rope / Parking Frenzy 🙂 on your own.  i.e. make a copy to showcase it. If you can possibly afford it, get the game built ; don’t code it yourself.  This is so that you get to grips with “running” a studio.

On your point about console vs mobile : THQ has just filed for bankruptcy.  Kabaam, however, is clocking in $100 million per month, I believe.  It’s not about the platform that’s cooler, it’s about where the audience is.  Make a super-cool game on the mobile?

Finally, if you’re really passionate about gaming and would like to get some experience in game development, reach out to the folks at Games2win ; I hear they have some exciting plans for 2013-14 :))

    Regards

    Mahesh

  5. :), good one

  6. Hey my point of saying that I want to have a studio which develops pc and console game is not to say that mobile gaming industry is and way smaller or I am not comparing.
I said that just because I have some game ideas(not just some a lot of them to be precise), but some which i really want to see to be made in a game.

And the ideas which I have are not suitable for a mobile game.

I have already worked on 2 mobile games with my friends and they are out on app store.

So just making myself clear that why i mentioned PC and console gaming

  7. I am really passionate about gaming, thats the only reason I am not at some NIT.
Secondly never ever I am going to stop coding, I am passionate about coding as much as I am for gaming.

I surely will have a portfolio soon, but the point to study in a well known college is, to get a job in better company, understand how things works, gather some money to start a studio.

And once again sorry if I sounded that I am comparing but I never said anything against mobile gaming. I am a hardcore gamer, but no less of a casual gamer. I have not played any AAA title for a long time. But I do play on my tab or cell everyday even its just for a min or 2. So I am not against mobile gaming.
I mentioned PC and console because I have some game ideas which will work only on pc or console. I do have ideas for mobile and I am already on for putting them up. Actually worked on 2 games(mobile games).

  8. One word i would describe your state and what we are trying to say is. You are passionate of Console gaming Development or about starting up console game developing studio. majority of audience and revenue generation comes through Online,Mobile, Social, Apps.

  9. I dont agree with you Jack
You are definitely wrong if you say majority of audience and revenue generation comes though online, mobile, social apps.
A AAA game title’s revenue is was more than mobile games
Only COD sales up to $1 Billion each year and there are many more AAA titles every year
Only reason of decrease in sales on PS3 and Xbox 360 this year is due to their age.
These console are more than 5 year old. Now anyone willing to buy a new console is most probably gonna wait for next generation console.
