Calling all Tech Guru Views! ASP.NET v/s PHP

Folks,

My site www.artbugs.in is up… do provide feedback! Artbugs.IN is India’s window to the world of Art, Arty Sculptures of Paintings from Top Artists, and especially emerging artists and those from the interiors who do not have a platform to showcase their talent and earn a reasonable income. Interested artists write in (Painting, Sculpture, Unique Home Décor, Hand Made Furniture… anything out of the extra-ordinary!) Samir@perspective.net.in

This Debate:-

Our site is developed on PHP/MySQL with cost being the primary consideration; while someone just told me ASP.NET is better for E-Commerce sites. My Dev Head tells me we went with PHP due to lower dev cost, lower license cost etc…

However is ASP.net better, what about the other platforms?

– Can PHP/MySQL be ported to another platform?

– Is the source code for PHP/MySQL re-usable?

– If my key consideration is fast site loading, mobile friendly browser view etc. which is the best?

Many Thanks!

  1. php is just fine. You can evaluate other options when you hit the scale. I know lot of techies swear on a particular technology, but php is good. don’t worry too much about it — at least not now. as for site loading etc. you can fine tune lot of things without changing the entire stack.

  2. PHP is best choice compare to ASP.NET. There are plenty of options for performance tuning with PHP and MySQL, if you’ve any performance issues in future. And yes, your developer is Right. Windows hosting cost more than Linux hosting and there is no concrete reason to build your ecom site using ASP.NET. You can reuse PHP code. Mobile friendly browser view is client side programming (css/js). It doesn’t depend what server technologies (PHP / ASP.NET) you’re using to render the UI. PHP is just fine. Google, Yahoo, Facebook and many more uses PHP. No harm in going with it.

  3. Your Dev is right, PHP is the right choice. Also do read this – PHP Vs ASP.net
