Going all in: How I burnt my previous business to focus on my biggest bet

UPDATE BY EDITOR: SEPT 16, 2015

THIS DISCUSSION IS BEING CLOSED AS RODINHOODERS HAVE REPORTED FRAUD AND SCAM REGARDING MOWARES AND ITS SISTER COMPANIES.

ALL THESE LINKS COMPLAIN OF THE SAME THING 🙁

Hello!

I am Arjun Subburaj, a serial mobile entrepreneur. Have you ever thought, what if there was my own branded instant messenger for my company or team, where I control the server? Or a mobile dating app for your college? Or an Upworthy like viral content showcase for my favorite political party or celebrity? I pondered such questions and founded a venture.

I started AppDupe as an experiment. The goal was to bring the technology powering the billion dollar companies to common folks like us, to start something with it. We looked at Google Search Keyword Analysis for the most searched turnkey web and mobile products and went on to create completely rebrandable, immediately deployable, quite scalable turnkey clone scripts of Whatsapp, Tinder, Snapchat, Instagram etc. You can buy any of our products, launch a similar service, either for a different geography or attack a different niche where the original player has not yet attacked. Example: Instagram for Cats, Tinder for India (In a regional language or some such USP), Whatsapp for Enterprise etc.

We had a year’s rough journey where an initial mobile app vendor betrayed us and started a site similar to ours and started selling the same scripts we paid him to do. Then one of our Co-Founders did some questionable things and defected. But we made sure that revenue was making up for some of that and giving us something not to cry about.

We now want to go light years ahead in achieving our goal of starting AppDupe, by offering all of our home grown products for free! (Some external vendor products will still be costed and clearly mentioned)

YES! FREE!!!

You read that right. Until recently, our Whatsapp pack was selling for $999 and selling very well. We want to change how we are perceived. We want to give everything away for free and if you are impressed with the product, looking for help installing the server or to do something serious with the product and would need customization, hopefully, you will look to us.

The reason for this attitude?

We have now found a product that we are betting everything on, Uber for X. We wanted ourselves to stop getting distracted and concentrate on just our SAAS, which we are going to showcase in TC Disrupt in SF on Sep 6th. Its kinda like in the pirate movies where the captain of the pirate ship shoots a hole through the floor of their own vessel, so that their only option is to fight to take control of their target ship, MOWARES is that, for us now 😀

Regular updates will be posted on our blog about how our crazy experiment of giving stuff away for free is turning out, so that you can decide from the data if you want to try it too.

I hope everybody gets what they want, happy founding!

Sincerely,

Arjun

  1. Oh yeah, if anyone wants to know the name of the Bangalore based vendor, just shoot me an email to arjun@mowares.com

    Cheers!

  2. Arjun – why not open source the code instead?

  3. Sounds like a winning poker strategy “going all in on your best hand and not playing other lesser ones”! All the best. Commendable work on on your products that are now free.

  4. hey arjun,

quick reaction to these links – they sort of send out the wrong msg…. u may wanna fix them??

  5. Hello Asha,

The first link points to a post where I offered my product which was $79 at that time for free. I really like his content and thought my product will lend viral sharing features to his compelling content.
The second link is of one of our products itself, it is a clone of 9Gag.TV. If you think the product demo screenshot is provocative, then you have probably not followed 9Gag.TV, which we were hoping to emulate 🙂 That product along with its questionable screenshot was fetching us $2k+ per month. If you’d rather I remove it, let me know.

    Cheers!

  6. Hello Rishi

We are looking for partners who would be able maintain the products as opensource projects.
Please let me know if you or someone you know would be interested in taking ownership of one or all of our products.

    Thanks.

  7. Poker, huh? Thank you, I will use that next time 🙂

  8. Not sure what you mean by “partners who would be able maintain the products as open source projects”. When you said “We want to change how we are perceived”, I was thinking more on the lines of open source. Hence, I was suggesting that you just open your source code for developer community – put it on GitHub or some other platform and let people experiment with it, build on top it, let it be accessible to all in true open source sense.

  9. Hi Arjun,

I downloaded the FreshIM for iOS project to look at it, its missing lot of files. Thought of informing you.

    Regards,

    Ruturaj.

  10. Hello Ruturaj

There are a couple of delivery zip file packages that have to be imported, we are preparing a video walk through so that people can do it even easier. Also, about to update the bases to make the Whatsapp and Tinder clone apps to work with Google watch and Google Glass.

    Cheers!

    Arjun
