Internet Censorship – Rs 2500 crore case against Mouthshut.com

Hello everyone, recently I came across a news item wherein a Builder has sued Mouthshut.com for 2000 crore damages, for having negative reviews on their website.

(Please Refer: 1) https://www.openthemagazine.com/article/nation/the-irony-of-a-name

 2) https://www.medianama.com/2013/08/223-mouthshut-coms-tally-over-790-takedown-notices-240-legal-notices-11-court-cases/ )

I am planning to start a web portal providing detailed info (including images, videos) of certain business segments. Customer Reviews will play an important role in decision making of the consumers – the idea is based on the lines of what Zomato is doing for Restaurants & Caterers.

Apart from the normal business challenges, what bothers me is the LEGAL troubles that I may face due to bad / negative reviews of a certain business. The IT Act seems confusing, being a novice even a single court case (even if it claims 0.001% of what the above mentioned builder has claimed from Mouthshut) may completely hamper my entrepreneurial beginning.

Kindly advice how to safeguard the interests of my startup & maintain honesty in my work by providing true customer reviews.

  5. I think you have to pay a certain amount as deposit/fees for the amount you sue

Lets find out if this builder has done the same??

I pinged the owner of Mouthshut.com for this
