A bored housewife built a database of Bollywood’s lyrics!

Hello everyone!! Like most of the small town Indian girls, I got married at an early age, and could not pursue to do anything big in my life. It’s been 10 years and I don’t have any regrets. I focussed on looking after my only daughter, who is studying in class three. I was a post graduate in Zoology and could not pursue higher studies because of my marriage. After that I never thought of doing a job or dream anything big in my life.  In these last decade I have stayed in three different cities Chandigarh, Ahmedabad and Mumbai; accompanying my husband where his job took him.

One year back I realized that I should utilize my time in some idea to engage myself. I usually browse internet to get information for my daughter studies. I am big fan of Bollywood as well. I usually follow the lyrics of Bollywood songs in my free time. One day I had an idea – to build up a Lyrics website of Bollywood. I didn’t have any technical knowledge how to build up a site. I spoke to my brother Jubanashwa to help me on the domain get registered and build up a site for that. He encouraged me to do the same and informed me that it can be a source of income through google adsense advertising. But that was not the concern when I started working on the lyrics webportal by collecting the lyrics from different sources. I loved my work, a good knowledge recap on the lyricist, singers and movies so far in Bollywood. I named out the Bollywood Lyrics site as BOLLYRICS.COM

After one year of complete dedication, now Bollyrics.com has almost having all the lyrics of the Indian film industry. The site is getting 2000 views per day. Without any prior technical and online marketing knowledge, I reached whatever I could do alone. I am posting this discussion over here to seek guidance from all the experienced digital entrepreneurs: 

  1. How to monetize it more?  Right now it’s getting 20$ per month placing google adsense on the site. Cost per click is very less for the entertainment site (what I got to know later).

  2. Other way to get traffic?  

  3. Any Social media suggestions to make it more viral?

  4. Suggestion on the look and feel of the website? 

  5. Over all suggestions?

    quick question – HOW MANY song lyrics does your site have at the moment. 

    and what year to what year have you covered?

    i grew up on a lot of bollywood music so will definitely go through your site and give you feedback.

    Bollyrics contains 7,971 lyrics as of today.

    It covered the songs from 50’s too. I collected the lyrics whichever movie names i came across.

    1. How to monetize it more? – Ads, Have you observed Vevo as a major player who packages, lyrics on international music videos and is first to launch it on youtube, you become #1 first to launch Bollywood videos on youtube. Later you can tie-up with them or ask them to take over your business.

    2. Other way to get traffic?  – Instead of people coming to your website (remembering your site name) you reach to people. through plugin, widget on players on windows, android etc. There are many lyrics plugin but none with bollywood (big audience) or there is no repository source from where lyrics could be pulled.

    3. Any Social media suggestions to make it more viral? – Reach out to the radio channels.

    4. Suggestion on the look and feel of the website? – Needs to be changed site looks 8 years off.

    5. Over all suggestions? – Get forum started on your website, Also add dialogue category, For example many like me like complete movie dialogues of Andaz Apna Apna, Sholey etc.Take care of all the legalities.

  6. ways to monetize:

    1) partner with karioke.

    2) partner with music teachers – i would love to be able to sing better and if i can pay small amount to start with.

    3) partner with music bands so that they can hire each other.

    4) let people buy a song.

    5) sell posters,pillow covers , bedsheets with lyrics of a song.

    6) new singers can sing the song and be heard , people can hire new singers.

    7) buy lyrics of a song if lyrics are not available easily online.

    8) premium membership – if you want to see lyrics of more than 10 songs in a week – pay up 🙂

    9) sell music instruments for commission.

  12. Isn’t there any legal formalities that needs to be cleared before copying content (lyrics) from the sources and displaying it on your website? I am not sure if you have already done the research on this; but just curious to know what all formalities have you done before copying the content from other sources to your own website. And if it is copied, doesn’t it affect your SEO ranking?
