Startup

An entrepreneurial fantasy

Hello RHs,

This is a post done in some bit of excitement more than real thought given to it, yet pushing it.

I’ve been wondering we’re a decently big group of thinkers & doers. Among some 5800 odd members, we’re having:

  • Some of the smartest Idea-people on board to curate and come up with best of the ideas
  • Development geeks: Rodinhoods probably boasts of some real rock star developer members
  • Some cool design heroes: freelancers or with some team
  • Some great gurus and mentors to guide us all including our own Alok sir
  • Some investors, or wannabe resource enablers
  • Basically, a whole bunch of talent from all sorts of domains a good start-up really requires!

Now, what I was actually scratching my head with was this: while we’re all occupied with our own start-ups and jobs; imagine what will happen if all of us joined hands together for one single project simultaneously that could probably do some good to society while still being profitable, a product / project which is socio-economically viable i.e.

Just imagine some bunch of us handling legals, some doing technology, some would be crafting the designs and assets while other group busy building prototypes, doing marketing and much more – our 1st community-crafted product! I feel excited, already getting goosebumps.

Or am I thinking way too wayward; that probably all being already hell-occupied with one (or more) ventures will never really find enough time and energy left to do a parallel community-driven product development!

Anyway, the best outcome of this all – this will leave us all learning some great skills while building a product together, exchanging ideas, tools, thoughts, working styles and all that from each other! This will be a real FREE gem, a real FREE learning experience for everyone involved. At least more practical learning one could get than those “Rs.27,000/- entry fee workshops” for entrepreneurs!

Any case, do leave your thoughts, it would be interesting!

Thanks,

Prashant Chanchal

  1. Good thought, Prashant. I think Tanutejas also tried something in this line but for a different need altogether: to create the next big thing from India.

I am in 🙂 for both the ideas. Collaboration and several minds resonating single idea and working towards making it happen – sounds very interesting.

Keep up the good work but if possible consider ‘online’ mode of participation too 🙂

    Good luck,
    Nithya Prabu.

  2. Prashant…as said correctly by Nithya, Tanutejas also tried but u need to keep patience if you really want to make thing happens as said above because its going to be slow process and if u wanna make it fast then need 100% devotion. I am also in within my limits.

  3. Prashant,

Although this thought must have crossed many a minds already but there are a few things more which need to be assimilated before we put this to task (No Mean task if executed though)

“do some good to society while still being profitable” Do we have any Framework here to work on ? Social good as in ? Profitable how ?

“some bunch of us handling legals, some doing technology, some would be crafting the designs and assets while other group busy building prototypes, doing marketing and much more – our 1st community-crafted product!” Who would have ownership or would it be free domain, like SourceForge and others similar ?

Though we have a Larger Number visible, as rightly noted by yourself everyone has something of their own to attend too “probably all being already hell-occupied with one (or more) ventures will never really find enough time and energy left to do a parallel community-driven product development!” Would that be sufficient as contribution to do something which would be Time Driven or deadline based to be effective as well ? With all the various components in parts to be executed in phases or parallely for all purposes. So if some volunteer, but get caught up later the whole project is in Quandary again, waiting till the remaining finish the required parts or get reassigned (If available)!!!

Ownership (as in until completion as assigned or taken upon oneself) and again OWNERSHIP – Possession or with a Right to transfer to others

I Like your Idea and thoughts over this, but needs to be practical as well to get things executed to have a meaning to it to a destination, it is definitely a Wish List which needs more Thinking and working yet else would be Just enough GAS with little weight in it to be Grounded and no one to Complain to as well since it is Free Domain.

An Idea is always there, but since others also have it not many see the Light until someone takes the first Daring step to expose it and Discuss it to bring it out in the open to let others know it exists, then if its App building, Funding or even Marketing, looking for Partners, co founders or simply expertise requirement for a particular part of the whole Picture to make complete Sense, has to be in Total Control at all times to be Fruitful too, else would fizzle out with a Big Bang to start with, and the Dream would get shattered simply with a Glass of Water in the Face to wake up shocked.

As for Fantasy, GOD –  “I poked HIM and he ‘ouched’ and finally replied – son, to be a great entrepreneur, you have to understand the complete flow. How it all works. And stop complaining.” Those who know me, know that I Poke a lot 😉

A Glass is Either Half Full or Half Empty or you can think about the Shape of the glass, the material used to make it, if the water is Drinkable, if it is Filtered or even how to conserve it in hard Times, then we have a lot more Ideas yet to work upon from there upon!!! Oops I just gave a few more Ideas 😉

And again As Put by Alok “Being realistic is seeing a glass half empty. Being positive is seeing a glass half full. Being aware is seeing water trapped in glass. Being enlightened is seeing two kinds of manifestations, co-existing peacefully.” Possibilities are Endless and Limitless.

Just my Personal 2 cents Practically and Logically, we have  5,908 more to go yet!!! (As on Date) Exciting, Push it!! Good Idea!

Fantastical though, needs a lot more thought to make it Practical and workable for Sure!!! Cheers!!!

  4. Great thought Prashant!

However, after reading through, I feel you have probably written a detailed mission of Alok Sir starting the Rodinhoods 🙂 In his vision of promoting entrepreneurship, Sir has created an open platform for people to connect and grow.

And I feel it is virtually impossible for 5800 members to have a single vision, especially when each one is nurturing their individual passions with super dedication :). From my limited experience, I have also seen that entrepreneurs tend to have extremely strong opinions. It is part of being an entrepreneur as unless you do not have strong conviction yourself, it is not possible to convince others to believe in your idea.

Thus so many strong minds coming together may actually become a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth.

  5. One up for Online mode of participation. 🙂

  6. If Wikipedia and second life can be successful, why not this?

I am pretty positive about its success with multiple minds.

May be we should build upon the successful model of wikis and second life .

May be we could START as a single vision and let various version spring to life and get merged & divided & re mergered as need be.

  7. Thanks for the reply Omkar.

I’m encouraged someone seems to be nodding in positive.

My idea was not to build wikipedia or second life. It’s about first co-building a great team of thinkers and doers here, followed by brain-storming few ideas (I have few too), finalizing one and then going hard at it!

Your response (along with others’ who have responded here) gives a boost. Let’s take it to the next level.

    Prashant Chanchal

  8. Great to have your reply here Jitendra,

Totally agree to you on your point mentioning Alok sir. This was needed. And another thing, the open houses are yet another reason to cheer about it, like Alok sir once said, it has the potential to be our very own TED.

Coming back to the topic, it indeed is impossible to engage 5800+ members to have a single vision specially when each one of us have such strong belief in our own ideas and we tend to differ every single corner. However you seem to have mistaken me, I never proposed it’s going to be ‘my idea’ that we’re gonna take up. We’ll first build a team of all those who see a vision in the idea of collaborating together to build something beautiful that someday we as Indians can take proud in and say look this is what we’ve co-built and maybe present at our own TED – the open house (I’m yet to attend one though)

If we manage to build a team whose visions and thoughts resonate together, it’s not difficult to brainstorm few great ideas together and freeze upon a final one and take it further. Are you game?

    It’ll go like this:

    1. Gather people seeing the vision in this idea of joining hands
    2. Gather their details, what they’re best at, how can they best contribute
    3. Set up team collaboration environment (basically ways to collaborate together, chat, share and more)
    4. Brainstorm few ideas on the table, take feedback from the community (other RHs who’re not part of it)
    5. Finalize one, again involve everyone else not directly participating in deciding things like name, tagline etc so that every member is passively connected to it and can connect to it later when the urge comes up.
    6. Start building in guidance of mentors here, including Alok sir. Even the funding can easily come in through some of our seniors here.
    7. Launch proudly and best of all, we’ll for sure then have a strong team of 5800+ members to test it, buy it, spread the word around. That will be like Guru-dakshina by members, lol!

    Cheers,

    Prashant Chanchal

  9. Thanks Manish,

It’ll be great having you on-board with the kind of experience you bring in. Looking forward to. It’s shaping up.

    Cheers,

    Prashant

  10. Hi Nithya,

    Sorry for a delayed reply.

Thank you for all the encouragement. Sure, we must and we will have the ‘online’ mode of participation too. Will be great working together. Meanwhile could you share the link (Tanutejas), I missed that.

    Cheers,

    Prashant Chanchal

  11. Darshan sir,

Always great to have your take on anything Rodinhood! Sorry for a bit delayed reply.

I read your response twice where you’ve quoted lines from my own posts ‘in conversation with God’, made me realize where I’ve been erring and where it’s going good. It indeed should be our first priority to see things realistically while being positive and aiming for enlightenment.

Without much delay, allow me to thank you for all the good (and evangelistic/mentoring) words, yes 5908 more to go, and now with this thread back alive again, I’ve got newer energy to push it with more boost, horlicks and bournvita!

    Thanks,

    Prashant Chanchal

  12. Yes Prashant, it would be definitely different than Second lifethingiverse GitHub & wikipedia

What I meant was in context of collabrative working  i.e. multiple brains working in single direction has already succeeded (both as a concept as well as commercially) in above examples and many more AND if those guys can do it, we can definitely do it.

  13. Prashant, sounds fantastic but I think the discussion will be always on unless we take the first step forward. Looks like there are interests from fellow Rodinhooders.. let’s get into action with whatever little we could and take on board others as and when they join us.

    Some get motivated by the idea;

    Some by the discussions;

But several will be interested only when we ‘Do’ !

So let us start the action part.. and encourage more people to join us. Since its an open platform; let us keep everything visible to everyone.. so that they can keep a tab on what’s happening.

    Keep me informed.

  14. Hi Nithya, you’re absolutely right there – when we ‘Do’, only then things will gain some momentum.

I deliberately delayed this reply as I wanted to ‘Do’ something and then post something concrete. I have found 1 project which can be brought on for further examination.

Before I talk about the idea, I’m confused – should we first try to gain momentum, ask people to join the wagon, accumulate the data, their interests, their availability etc. AND THEN ACCORDINGLY COME UP WITH AN IDEA which we each can connect to

    OR

should we go the other way around – i.e. start with some idea, brainstorm over its feasibility etc within ourselves (whoever has agreed to be a part of it so far, 5-6 of us), and if we approve the idea, we THEN next build momentum to push it more strongly among TRHS community and include more newer people when they learn of the idea and feel they can be a part of this ‘community-driven product building initiative’?

I would believe the second option sounds more logical. What’s your take on it?

Coming back to the idea – I have sketched a quick ‘9-item buisness model canvas’ along with a rough graphics explaining it. How would you recommend I share it? What about team-logistics (where we communicate, how and how are files shared and all).

    Looking forward,

    Prashant

  15. Hello Prashant, I apologise for the delay. I wanted to write in detail so kept postponing and ended up not writing at all 🙁 This is going to be the biggest challenge as all our creative energies are totally focussed on our startups that we would find it extremely difficult to come to a mutually accessible time. It is not impossible but a very huge obstacle – so we must agree to a time template even before we focus on other things as this is going to be the only investment from all of us to make this happen.

Back to your questions.. yes, the second option is good, but my request would be to keep it open to public – I mean all our discussions, decisions, developments… this would motivate more people to see what’s happening and join the conversation.

I think we could create a blog space and or a facebook page or something similar to start with and take it forward from there. Since the goal is collaboration I think open platform is the way to go.. let me know your thoughts on the same.

Meanwhile check this thread that was started by Tanutejas Saraswat.. and check my comments for the same and let me know if it could be useful to us.

Let me know your thoughts and I would love to see the canvas.. and I hope this will prove to be an excellent learning curve for all involved in the process of making a great product.

    Cheerios,
    Nithya.
