Freak: Game based chatting extravaganza

Hola Rodinhooders,

This moment is much awaited one for me, I have always wanted to post about my idea or product on TRH. Today is the day and I bring you FREAK.

Freak is to break the monotony of chatting and the hazardous ways of Gaming by logging in via some social media sites revealing a lot of personal information online every time a game is to be played. Freak is a compact app that offers simultaneous gaming and chatting with a whole new set of exciting features.

Freak is founded by 5 college passouts (Aroof Shaikh, Harshwardhan, Sairam Jetty(Me :D), Mumphi Ghosh & Ayesha Farooq) with the idea of breaking the boredom involved in chatting. We once passed out college went to be a part of the silicon valley in much reputed companies with a lot of enthusiasm, just to realize it won’t last for long. Pass-times were spent only by chatting with friends online that got boring every time we ran out of topic. When we coffee lovers, met one evening at a café, the idea of freak took birth. The conversation was a regular one that involved how bored they were with their jobs and that chatting was the only option to fill in the hours. We, were all the cream of our own college and refused to fit it, when they could stand out.

Freak is a game based chatting application –

Freak offers simultaneous gaming and chatting just by flipping the screen over on the same application. Freak is a gaming application that doesn’t require any kind to social media interference, and lets you log in only by authenticating your phone number. All contacts on your phone list, having freak installed are already connected to each other and ready to play games just by being on each other’s phone list.

Home Screen

“Chatting got boring after a few minutes all the time. The idea of playing a small yet exciting game in between chats with friends was just irresistible “says Aroof.

Tic Tac Toe & Arm Wrestling

Slowly and steadily the whole Idea around freak was discussed over various such evening coffees, and finally we were self assured that we wanted to bring this baby to the world. We did not even spare a second thought before leaving the silicon valley, since we were totally sure of being accepted along with other existing applications of the same genre, by offering the world what we think many deep down want.

One overwhelming part of freak is that it lets people play games with anyone in their contact list.

The USP’s that makes freak stand out amongst rest:

Multiple DPs: Tired of changing your display picture every time you want to flaunt a new one? You really do not have to be much worried, because Freak is going to make it easier for you. Unlike the conventional, one DP, Freak will help you set upto 4 display pictures, and also allow you to set a time period after which it automatically changes to the next one. To ice the cake, each DP will have the option of a caption to be added to it.

      Multiple Display Pictures

Tagging friends in a group: Freak unlike other applications, allows unlimited number of users to be added in a group.

Tagging in group chat

The mute option indeed helps us avoid some annoying groups, but what if you could really know how much of a huge conversation was actually addressed to you? Yes, now with freak, you can tag your friends in a group, in case something specific is to be told to him/her. Freak has also designed the idea of being able to tag a friend in your status on freak in case, the status updated is specifically for someone (special). In freak, a user needs to approve of him/her being added to a group instead of taking the pain of leaving the group later.

Tagging in Status

Circular chat concept: This was an idea till now, which has been realized by freak to break the monotony of the regular looking chat screen.

What if you really did not have to enter the one-to-one chat screen, and still get a glimpse of the most preferred received chats? Yes, Freak is going to make it that user friendly in a stylish fashion with the help of the circular chat concept.

Circular chat

One tap login: This feature is the most user friendly of all. As per the existing condition, to play a game online, we need to login via some social media to be able o play games, and also most of the times we play games with strangers although unwantedly due to the existing infrastructure of online gaming.

Freak came along to solve this problem, by letting users login to Freak only by providing the phone number. The exchange of OTP registers the user to freak in a single click and lets them play games with anyone in the contact list without exposing any personal data.`

Sending of PPTs and documents: While busy on Freak, you do not have to login to your email id just to be able to send any important document across. Freak, along with many funky features in chatting, also allows documents of any formats to be send across to anyone connected via freak.

Documents like doc files, PPTs, spreadsheets, PDFs, etc can be sent across freak to any contact.

Simultaneous Gaming and chatting: This is the uniqueness of Freak amongst all existing applications of its genre. An application that connects via phone number to all contacts in the address book and lets you play as well as chat with all these cool features, being offered by Freak is one of it’s kind. Chatting and gaming in freak is just a flip screen away. While gaming, just flip the screen to chat to your opponent or to anyone else in that matter by auto pausing the game. In  the same way, when bored of long conversations, play a small game to spice it up.

The vision and the purpose:

This product was initially thought of as an ice breaker for conversations, and later on all the features and functionalities were built upon the single idea of simultaneous gaming and chatting. The idea of simultaneous gaming and chatting in a single application that allows login only via the phone number, seemed so attractive, that all the other features were decided to make the decided experience even more smooth and user friendly.

Our target audience is the world. We have not built or thought of this application targeting a small section of the society or any age group. This application has been designed in a way that one and all can use it. The application is so user friendly, that someone need not be a pro gamer to play games in it, although offers a lot of exciting features like the avatar name for a gamer and the ledger board with exciting badges to have the gamer’s interest.

  1. WhatsApp is a huge market to break into ; even Facebook finds it tough to have users on its’ messaging app.

You’ve added functionality on top of Whatsapp / other chatting apps, but they are more of enhancements rather than a USP for your chat app to be a success.  e.g. adding unlimited friends, sending any file, circular views.  These aren’t reasons to shift out of whatsapp.

You mentioned : “This product was initially thought of as an ice breaker for conversations”  Put that into a context ; perhaps it’s a chat app for event firms (tried by other firms, not sure how popular it is)?  Maybe dissociate from the chatting service, and build the icebreakers that can be pushed by a WhatsApp group Admin to its’ members ?

  2. Hey Mahesh,

Thanks for having a look at the product and taking time to comment. The major catch of the application are the simple mutiplayer games which are present in app and these games will grow in number in future, we would want a user to open freak to play a game with this friends and the chat has been enhanced as we do not want the user to use some other application while he is not playing a game. Just imagine opening an application -> selecting a game -> choosing a contact and start playing simple games like tic tac toe, arm wrestling, chess, scrabble etc.., that simplicity is what we are trying to bring and call it instant gaming.

adding unlimited friends, sending any file, circular views might not be a USP. Tagging a contact, Multiple display pictures, Audio Buzz, shake to buzz are USP’s of our application.

  3. How does it differentiate from any gaming app having an additional chat facility too? For example, Zynga poker does have chatting option too. I can see this as an aggregator but then it does have only its game and not others so in that sense it is not.

Another issue with chatting along with gaming is, I find it very inconvenient to chat along with playing game, its distracting. So I will either chat or will play game. And won’t do both together. But then, I might be one off case too.

Kudos for building a great app but from usability side, I am not very sure.

Would love to hear your thought process.

  4. Hey Nitin,

Thanks for the time, when we say games these are not huge strategic games or games with high res graphics. These are simple games which will help you pass some time and have some good fun by extending your text based interaction. Our chat is very much different from what Zynga Poker offers, Multiple display pictures, tagging, Audio & shake to buzz, cool stickers make our chatting section of the app even more interesting than any other chat application in the market. It is not compulsory for you to chat while playing a game, it is just a feature.

These simple games will give scope to a lot of chat involving taunts, challenges, appreciations & abuses 😛 which would require you to chat simultaneously before taking another hit.

I hope to have answered all your points.

    Thanks Again 🙂 !!

  5. There are elements of the app I like, but things got confusing when I started reading the post. May be, start with a specific use case/focused user base?

  6. Hi Rishi,

May be we need to be more specific on our use cases, whether to go completely on gaming or chatting in the content. The confusion is because of the unique and new features which we have in chat are great add ons to the application which we cannot over see. But we will be going with gaming as our complete focus and chat will remain just as an add on to the experience. We still need to have a look at user behaviour towards our application after we release our Beta, I would request you to register for our Beta and help us with a review on December 15.

It would be great if you reply with the features which have interested you.

    Thanks !! 🙂

  7. 🙂 I see where your target audience is. I think, it may hit that and have the potential to get popular. Best wishes buddy !!

  8. Thanks a lot Nitin !! These words of encouragement are much required and appreciated !!

  9. Hi Sairam,

It sounds like an interesting idea. I have signed up for the Beta and waiting to check it out. Hope you guys are launching the iOS version as well 🙂

From what I understand, your app is more along the lines of WeChat and Line which have chatting and gaming features inbuilt. Would be interesting to see the proliferation of such hybrid chatting apps in India.

  10. Hi Sridhar,

You have aptly titled the application, except for a change that unlike we-chat & Line we have everything In-app and a user does not have to download any other application to support any of FREAK’s features.

Yes, we are releasing our application in 3 major platforms Android, IOS & Windows. I hope our Beta version will freak you out !! 😉

    Thanks.
