How Does Blogging/Web Publishing Business Work ??

Hello Rohinhoods…After a long time I am adding some content and it’s a question.

I recently had a discussion with a person who handles a blog group having 2 million hits a month. He said he’s not the only one..there are many such blog groups/web publishers who are making fortune just on the basis of content/articles.

Blogging is one of the best ways to earn money when you are a student. No investment except time and little bit of mental effort is required and you can start earning at least your pocket money.

I run 2 blogs. Technology & Social media based TechTheBest.com & a finance based blog – FinanceElements.com …. I hardly get 8-9K visits a month.and my income from the blogs is not significant. Can someone who is experienced in this field please enlighten me about how this business works.

  • How can they afford to have a huge offices, hire 20-30 people and run like a small company?
  • How do they identify what content to post?
  • Do they buy traffic?
  • What is their revenue source other than Adsense? How frequently and how much content do they add?
  • How do they get page ranks so fast?
  • How do they manage to get visitors in millions and pageviews in billions??

Labnol.org, Ayushveda group, DemandMedia group, AOL blogs etc. have multiple blogs and all of them enjoy brilliant traffic.

  • Is your Adsense earning per click is directly proportionate to the no. of visitors? Because my one blog has 6000 visitors where I earn higher per click than the new blog which is in infancy right now.
  • Is it advisable to target US traffic to earn more money?

Can someone please throw some light on this? I have many friends in college who can write on different topics and I intend to start a blog group having multiple blogs like this Spanish group does https://www.weblogssl.com/.

Experienced folks, please share your valuable knowledge. 🙂

  2. Well Jay, this is my take on your questions.

How can they afford to have a huge offices, hire 20-30 people and run like a small company?

This question should have been last of all. But to hire 20-30 people, you must be earning at least Rs 5 Lakhs per month which in turn means you are having Millions of Unique visitors every month.

How do they identify what content to post?

Choose your theme of the blog  and find out what can be informative about that theme. What are people searching about it? What your visitors want.?

    Do they buy traffic?

It depends. Buy only if it can pay off in long run

What is their revenue source other than Adsense? How frequently and how much content do they add?

I feel that the best Alternative to Adsense is Chitika. However having direct clients for ads has the highest return in any case. And Please, never go for Indian Advertising Networks. They simply suck.

How do they get page ranks so fast?

There is no Fast. Write Original content. Be Useful to the readers. Make Search Engine Optimized. Use the right tags and wait. Getting a linkback from High PR website gives a major boost to Pagerank.

How do they manage to get visitors in millions and pageviews in billions??

A Quick way is to write about new things as they appear in market. Suppose a new OS has to be launched, gather information about it and write it. Google pays more weightage to the early and Original Content. Early bird always catches all worms.

    Free Advice

    • Try to get your Readers back. SEO Tricks can bring users once. They cannot force them to come to you repeatedly.
    • Never go after too much SEO. Try to write better content instead
    • Write the content for Your Readers not Google,  and encourage them to share on Social Networks.
    • Make a big fan base on Social networks. Typically 100x, where x is expected number of your daily unique visitors.
  3. Thanks Abhishek for the detailed answer. 🙂

  4. Hi Jay

I think your approach is a bit confusing.

Most of these bloggers probably started by blogging about things they just loved doing. They never started by thinking how much money they’ll make or how to increase traffic. Those were byproducts.

coming to specifics, your financeelements blog seems to be targeted at US audience.

Firstly, are you guys out of US?

Secondly, what is the finance background you guys carry?

The subject of the stories seem to be very broad. Right from personal finance to macro finance. you’ve covered it all. Try to narrow down the subjects. Some great Indian blogs covering personal finance are jagoinvestor.com, subramoney.com. Check the amount of comments they get, mind boggling.

In a way I would say try to higher the comments, higher the money you make.

Sorry, the answer you are looking for is not here. I’m infact asking you some key questions back.

    All the best.
