Is the ‘same day delivery service’ concept practically viable in the metros of India?

Hey Rodinhoods,

Have been seeing a lot of enthusiasm about the same day delivery/ courier service concept in the US and UK but I’ve always wondered if it would work here!

Looking forward to your valuable inputs.

Thanks a ton!

  1. Same day delivery would be possible in all the metro cities of India if the companies move towards marketplace model or if they work on a micro warehousing concept. Flipkart is already working on the same.

  2. Yes,it is very much possible. But totally depends on the product/service in question.

BTW,Amazon has already started same day delivery across all the metros, applicable to limited items and an extra charge of Rs. 100 for the same.

  3. it depends upon the need and the product i am purchasing.
if i need a set of pens that cost around 150 bucks i can wait instead of spending another 90 bucks(flip kart’s rate for shipping the product withing 24 hours) for urgent delivery.. the same goes for hair dryers and other lifestyle products.

On the other hand if i am purchasing a cell phone, hard drive,tablet,t-shirt’s etc that’s likely to cost more i wouldn’t hesitate to spend the extra cost incurred for urgent delivery that is only 90 bucks.

  4. May be questions should be, why hasn’t anyone being able to pull it off, without spending ton of money. Both Flipkart and Amazon have all the money they need for building infrastructure like this.

And can it be done without spending ton of money? ( I know, question on top of a question)

Look forward to a nice discussion.

  5. So far, maybe businesses were not interested in pulling off something like a same day delivery as people were not that demanding then and such services had little competition.Only now do they want to offer these services to differentiate themselves from the 5000 other E-comm that have sprung up.

Can it be done without spending tons of money? very doubtful! Unless you have an amazing backend infrastructure coupled with reliable partners in a marketplace model as Anoop said.

There is always a chance that we might have drones shooting parcels into our homes,or even have it delivered to you  while you are in a moving car 😀 😛 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25180906)

  6. I do know that Amazon and Flipkart have started this delivery in a day service. As Muhammed rightly put it, it does depend on the product. Smit, I do agree that it does differentiate you in terms of what you have to offer in terms of delivery.

This discussion was started with the view of pulling out what you guys think would think about a delivery service which helps the shipper schedule their pick up and the customer choose their time of delivery! Yes, if you want your product to be delivered between 8-9AM , you will have it then! The idea is to help people & companies send & receive stuff within a city and slowly test it between cities. I am also looking at linking up with e-commerce sites which could integrate our delivery service. Eventually, these sites could be chosen against others because they offer this kind of a delivery feature. This is something I’ve been working on and I’ll be back with another discussion on this idea soon. !

Let me know your thoughts about this. Will also start a separate discussion on the same too.
