Knock Knock! Sshhhh, Its a mail from me!

Hey Folks,

Over time and chats with lot of random people, one point came across very clearly is that everyone has something unspoken about someone.

Everyone had a crush on someone and more than 90% failed to express it. The other 10% did it with fake email ids.

Everyone has a manager / client / vendor who gives them a hard time. Most people cope with it and then leave them behind with a lifetime grudge. The simple reason, they can’t express themselves.

More so ever, everyone have people whom they want to appreciate, however feel shy to saying it on the face.

Have a look at MailFrom.ME

I started this as a platform just to encourage people to express themselves without letting them know whom the mail has come from. The idea behind the project was just provide a vent to those feelings and emotions by making it reach the right person without coming to the limelight.

It is an anonymous mailing website.

Do let me know you feedback on the service.

Cheers!

  1. Hi Neelesh,

The concept is good, but it has been there for many years. I remember people using these even 15 years back. A platform I can readily recall is emkei.cz. If you google “fake emailers”, you’ll find tons of these.

Question is- how do you differentiate yourself from these platforms, which are in fact providing more functionality than your platform (see Emkei’s available options, you can even create a “from” email address). One point of differentiation may be to target a certain section of the audience. Also, most of the fake emailers are positioned as a platform for sending prank emails.

    Feedback-

    1. It shows the “from” email as “info@mailfrom.me“. You might want to get more domains because this address would soon find its way into the blocklist of most email providers. So, this would have to be kept dynamic. Eg. Emkei’s mail straightaway lands into the spam folder.

    2. Get a captcha to avoid bots!

    Good luck!

    Nilay

  2. Neelesh – In “you are a” dropdown there is an option to select “collogue”.I am guess you meant colleague.

Must have been a typo but please correct it.

  3. WHY?

p.s. could be wrong but it looks like another replica of leak (https://www.engadget.com/2014/08/04/leak-anonymous-email/)

  4. Thanks Ashwin… Just fixed it 🙂

  5. Hi Rishi,

Leak was a similar app, however we are using our own email server while leak was using MailChimp API which can send emails only to OptIn subscribes which is why they got offline.

Also, more often than not, their emails used to get delivered to Spam / Junk folder for exchange or dominos. Ours hits the inbox 95% of the time.

  6. Neelesh – I was actually questioning the service. Such services are fun until someday someone misuses it and something unforeseen happens…have you thought about how you’d proactively address those?

Anonymity has its place, but not sure if the use cases you mentioned are the best candidates.

  7. hi neelesh,

something very strange happened – someone used MailFromMe to send me an anonymous note 🙁

now, i understand your POV – you are trying to help people express stuff anonymously so they don’t feel inhabited etc but as someone who receives a note like this – i find this kinda creepy 🙁

as you can see, it’s not an obscene note – but i still feel uncomfy.

i agree i’m not your target audience – this is more of a 20’s thing. but somehow i think there are so many other ideas worth pursuing….

  8. Neelesh,

This was the first thing I thought of when I read this post.. that you need to think about the security issues associated with this kind of services.. One may use it for stalking, terror, bomb scare etc.. it can become a big problem for you. I understand that anonymity is in fashion and there are plenty of apps with which one can message his friends etc but in that case the sender is verified by the app, but in this case, there is no way to do it which can lead to serious repercussions.

The idea in itself is not bad and can be fun but you may wish to tweak it a bit so that atleast you know the sender’s identity (if not the receiver) so that you can be safe in case of any unintended use.

  9. Hi Sandesh,

I understand the security issues. 2 things we’ve done to secure:

    1) It is clearly articulated in the T&C saying that the website is not responsible for the content of any email  sent.

    2) We keep a track of the Time & IP address from where the email was sent.

    Cheers!

  10. mailfromme could implement a service wherein every email you receive could be have a unique link

    https://mailfrom.me/ai33d03ka

1)A copy of the mail sent anonymously is stored on the server for a time period(a week). IP is also noted, (email id possibly could be used to validate it is a real sender)

2)If the message is a threat/obscene, then the receiver can click the unique link above and a details of 1) and the actual mail itself will be sent to the admin.

Now, whether this leads to a drop in users using the service is debatable if the above is implemented but I guarantee it that without 1) and 2), such a website will not last too long in India. The police will catch Neelesh and let him cool his heels until he figures out it was a mistake to take this anonymity thing too far.

  11. I am not a fan of this. for 2 reasons:

    – This quickly snowballs into hate mail / abuse mail

(I can say ANYTHING TO ANYBODY) and that sucks… the ‘responsibility’ of expression is negated

    – The REAL WORLD IS NOT ANONYMOUS

I would rather train people to SPEAK UP vs. hide behind e-mail servers that wear a burquaa
