Who is making/ will make money in E Commerce?

1. Deal merchants?

2. Brands?

3. Googles and Facebooks of this world?

4. Logistics companies?

Is there a E-commerce company in the list at all?

  1. Not deal merchants. They are only going to lose more in the long run. Google “Groupon Horror Stories”

For brands, eCom is yet another retail channel. The numbers are insignificant at this time. Over a period, they will scale, but discounts etc will mostly affect efficiencies rather than add to the bottomline. At least for now.

Goggle+Facebook. Absolutely. They are the only ones who are making money while piddly eCom sites are outbidding each other over a minuscule market size.

Logistics: Yes. To quite an extent. It is a new segment, which will even pay a premium in the coming days for efficiency. The trend has already kicked in.

eCommerce companies: Outside of valuation, which is bloated to begin with, nope. 2012 should see consolidation as well as removal of chaff. The ones with deep pockets and the ones with long term “build” (as opposed to “dress up the bride & sell”) plans will – in the long term, say 5rs+.
