Emailer Database: How one procures this?

Hi,

Of many challenges that we are facing while promotion of SmilingStart.com, one of them is creation of a great Emailer Database. We already ran a campaign and the response was good. However for future we lack database. Should we buy databases, are they good enough? If yes, then let us know few resources that can be helpful. If No, then please help us in understanding the email database gathering procedure.

  1. nice concept it will surely be successful but I think facebook page/ads will be more useful for your promotion efforts I don’t think people care to read mails from unknown senders although I am not a marketing expert .

  2. Bhawana, This is a great question. I will put together something for you / fellow Rodinhooders on Email Marketing. It will have everything you need to be successful in Email Marketing

  3. @Aneja eagerly waiting for your post 🙂

@Swapnil. Thank you. As much as we read and practiced we found emailers as one of the best sources to convey information. We are trying facebook promotions too but its acting a lot funnier than we expected. On our page we don’t see the post shares, however they are shared. While we put up an ad, our page starts reaching more people as per fb insights and as soon as the ad stops, the insights drop down – how is this possible, the ad is being placed for the website not the fb page. Also, the ad insights show some 120 clicks and zero conversions at our end. The GA report & the Fb report is showing discrepancies. Is our website lacking the attraction or is it some other issue?

  4. Off-topic.Does email mass-mailers work anyways? It doesn’t work on me and most often than not creates a bad impression of the service since the emails in these databases are farmed/scraped.

  5. No!!!!! Don’t buy the DB. You can get in trouble and your email domain will get blacklisted. There is some gray hat ninjagiri you can try but ROI may not be there.

For you the best bet is social. FB, Twitter, Pinterest, and maybe LinkedIn too, and definitely Stumleupon.

  6. Bhawana, I posted the article on Email Marketing. Hope you find it useful. Let me know if you have any questions.

  7. Hi Bhawana,

Getting a email database won’t solve any of your problems and IMO poor marketing strategy.

1.Getting authentic database is difficult 2. It is difficult to get a good response to random emails. 3. You can get your email blocked for spam. 4. You spend time and effort emailing people who are not aligned with your cause.

I think you are overlooking the more impactful marketing routes. Creating your own email database and creating a relationship with them will be more advantageous.

  8. Bhawana,

Buying an Email list can be less productive compared to generating your own list. But DON’T get Discouraged, If  you Manage the list correctly, you can make a tonne of Money. You have to follow the principles I outlined in my post. Get tight on who you Email – Segment your Email to create the Right audience. Optimize the Right way. Simple Rule – People will only buy products they are interested in. So you need to create the right segment (target audience) before you Email list.

There is a whole industry that thrives on it (aka Florida group of the 90s). In addition, to make Email Marketing successful you need to have a “Horizontal” Marketing strategy than a Vertical one. Meaning, once you acquire an Email, 1) sell it to many many Vendors or 2) sell many vendors products to him.

So if you can get a list at the Right price, or if u are able to strike a Barter deal, then Go for it. Generating your own list can take a painfully long time.

Let me know how I can help.

  9. Aneja, can you help with India lists?

  10. You are missing the point perhaps Abey?

  11. As my partner once told me – care to elucidate?  🙂

You are talking about the post buying list stuff or help with buying the list itself?

  12. Post list for most part. I don’t know yet if there is an authentic way to validate if the list is good or bad before u buy it – like with most things. But there are certain rules one needs to follow to make it right. If not even with your own email list, you cant make a cent!

If you want to learn how to swim, you have to enter the water. Correspondence course won’t work. So test it out, otherwise we are all in the guessing game

  13. bhawana… as predicted you’ve started a forest fire – pls check this out – ramanuj has just posted this…

    https://www.therodinhoods.com/forum/topics/3-cardinal-rules-of-email-mar

3 Cardinal Rules of Email Marketing and 2 observations

Rule 1: never buy email list. Never pay others to send mails to their list unless you know the open rate of emails (which is usually terrible for people who rent out their email list to others for sending emails) and the persons audience and your purposes are aligned, which is a rare case. If you send emails about deals on smart phones to my email list of law students who signed up on my list to learn more about legal research, it is never going to work.

Wait, it works for the list owner you end up paying, but not for you or the email recipients.

Rule 2: Drive the traffic coming to your website to sign up for your email list. It can be a pop over or a box at the top right corner or a button inviting to subscribe. Offer something – a small report/ a download in exchange for signing up. I personally do not offer any such thing for my email lists – just an invitation to keep in touch seems to be working.

Rule 3: Send only relevant mails. Send them at regular intervals. Not too many at once. Always remember how easy it is for people to filter any mails these days – they don’t even need to unsubscribe.

Observation 1: We did some webinars and people had to sign up for an email list to participate. We found this to be quite handy as a tool to increase the size of our list.

Observation 2: Another great way  to build a list in the long term is to start a community. My biggest email list is basically a ning website, just like this one.

  14. right on!

  15. You can break Rule 1 if you know how.  🙂

  16. Hi Bhawana,

I have done lots of email Marketing Campaign for our online store my experiences says You need to buy Email DBs from various sources available in market most of the time only 20% to 30% DB will be Valid and most DB will have redundancy.

To make Make  a effective email DB you have to do the following

    • Aggregate DB for target group from various sources and Filter the redundancy and invalid emails.
    • Constantly Grow the database as conversion rate will be only 0.5% to 1 %
    • Use White Label mailing Server with email Tracking this will give you important reports and also avoid your mails
      falling into Spam

Key Factor for succesful email marketing is HUGE Relevant DB + Strong ADD copy + White lable mass mailing Server.

    Regards,

    Prashant chauhan.

  17. Thanks Prashant, Yes we tried and did what you suggested, we had our own database and could send the mailers on our own so somehow we reached the conversion rate also.

Can you list a few sources from where DB can be bought?

  18. 🙂 I guess I know how to break the rule 1 🙂

  19. At Asha, when I posted this query of mine, which was killing me since days I really didnt see any spark that can lit the forest fire. But the response here is overwhelming. I guess now you’ll have to make tees for Forest fire creators :)).
