  1. Hi Kamal,

Though I may not fall under your addressed Audience of “Boys and Girls” 😉 in General Still trying to put through some Details which might help you in Fine tuning the Not Clearly DefinedAll the Latest Statistics and numbers related to Blogging industry in India” Needs to be Specific Statistical Data as er Requirement for the required Analysis per se.

A BLog is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order.

    Other forms :

    • Blogger
    • Vlog, a form of blogging for which the medium is video
    • Moblog, a method of publishing to a website or blog from a mobile phone

A BLog (a truncation of the expression WeB Log) is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). Until 2009 blogs were usually the work of a single individual[citation needed], occasionally of a small group, and often covered a single subject. More recently “multi-author blogs” (MABs) have developed, with posts written by large numbers of authors and professionally edited. MABs from newspapers, other media outlets, universities, think tanks, advocacy groups and similar institutions account for an increasing quantity of blog traffic. The rise of Twitter and other “microblogging” systems helps integrate MABs and single-author blogs into societal newstreams. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

The emergence and growth of blogs in the late 1990s coincided with the advent of web publishing tools that facilitated the posting of content by non-technical users. (Previously, a knowledge of such technologies as HTML and FTP had been required to publish content on the Web.)

Since this becomes a very Wide area to Analyse as well since not all people having Internet access everywhere are Socially active online, maybe some are active on some of the Other Social media platforms and a few others are also a part of the Blogosphere too but then again the needs of these Regular and Not so regular Bloggers may also be varied with regards to the reason they would Blog again, hence need to break it up for Commercial and Non commercial reasons broadly and then again with regards to Marketing sales and Content management for the same reasons if it is Monetized or Non-monetized too.

Since Now most people have the option of Staying connected always either on their various gadgets like the Desktops, Laptops, The hand held Pads, and also the Mobile Smartphones there are a lot of other factors which divide the Attention span and Time and Resources available to dedicate entirely to any one of the ways they might interact or engage too likewise given the fact that there are only 24 Available Hours per day with other priorities included to share in the same time too.

Having said that Blogging as an INDUSTRY is very Small as Yet Globally too. For which there are already Platforms catering to the same needs be it Big or small as per Individual or Corporate requirements for Consumption or Service.

To Better Understand or Explain Let me attempt it via some Info graphics and other Information to detail the Internet Penetration, Social Media Usage and Blogging Worldwide and then Regionally, Break it up with APAC (Asia PACific) which also Includes India as a sub set Geographically as Intended.

    The Global Picture
Following revisions to a number of countries, the number of worldwide internet users now exceeds 2.64 billion, representing global penetration of 37%

    Asia-Pacific In Context
APAC is home to almost 3.9 billion people, accounting for just under 55% of the total world population. The region hosts just under half the world’s Internet users, and 52.2% of the world’s active social media users:

However, to enrich this story, it’s worth looking at the infrastructural elements too. Mobile devices play a huge role in Asia’s social media scene

A good source of Data is available here for Global and Regional breakup (You would need to create a Public Account first) with APAC and India as well to Dig down.

Blogging Industry in India – An Overview

    What do Indians Blog About?

Indian bloggers have multifarious purposes for blogs. While the numbers of newbie mommy blogs from India are on the rise, many others take to professional blogging as well. Look at Amit Agarwal from Labnol.org, one of the most respected Indian blogger. Here is a brief account of most popular blogging niches in India:

    1. Technology – It is not without reason that India is known as the ‘tech hub’. There is a rising number of tech bloggers within the age group of 19-25 year bracket.
    2. Cricket – The gentleman’s game is a religion in India (*not a bit exaggerating*). Thousands of blogs are dedicated to cricket, encompassing every aspect of the game.
    3. Finance – Finance blogging is a popular niche too. One can find blogs / columns / stories / expert tips from finance experts on top finance blogs like AbhishekRungta.com and MoneyControl.com.
    4. Business / PR – India is growing in the SME sector and with high influx of corporate investment, cross-cultural business relations have grown significantly in which blogs like WATBlog.com, BuyerBehavior.org, Trak.in, CapitalMind.in are popular.
    5. Coupons – There are blogs that strictly cater to audiences who are on the lookout of online coupons for eCommerce purchases. The coupons-based blogs sell coupons and vouchers at less than market rate and make money.

Indian blogging is a Billion Dollar Industry when combined with eCommerce. Blogging is a profitable field, provided one follows certain rules and regulations. However, there are some, who think that the power of blogging should be used aesthetically. From India’s perspective, blogging has potential, more when Internet access reaches more people and users are sensitized about the concept and potential of ‘Blogging’.
The Indian blogging industry has received more negative coverage than positive ones, making people see this field with unnecessary skepticism. Corporate bigwigs like Infosys and Wipro have come out with ‘blogging guidelines’ for its employees, which if violated, can lead to severe penalties and in some cases, termination of employment.

These are the five main categories of blogging. Of course, there are personal blogs too but when we talk about niches, these are the main ones.

Some Top Advantages of Blogging – Why You Should Blog?

And if You Blog you also need a Hosting service (Could be free or Your Own site too) here are a Top 25 Hosting Sites listed

Before the rise of social media the main marketing tactic for a blogger to market their blog was building an email list and using that to distribute their content. It was hard work and many bloggers developed clever email list building tactics that facilitated the sharing of their blog. Bloggers built their online brand one email subscriber at a time.

Social media initially was  seen as a threat to blogging. When I joined Facebook in 2008 it had less than 100 million users and people were rapidly joining the  social network. Expressing yourself online was now easier and more social. Some people were even predicting the demise of blogging. Would Facebook kill the blog?

Micro blogging also started to appear in the guise of a strange sounding social media platform called “Twitter”. The questions were being asked would blogging descend into shallow snippets of information in 140 characters or less.  Would micro content create a superficial social web?

As Twitter rapidly grew it proved to be a very efficient means to distribute content, engage and grow a network of friends and followers that were interested in your topic globally. Social media has in fact saved blogging from stagnation and extinction as it has accelerated the online sharing and discovery of bloggers on tens of thousands of topics.

Social media has though proved to be a marketing mecca for bloggers that made them more visible than they could ever have hoped to be.

    Bloggers Have Many Choices

Social media has provided  many options for bloggers. You can now blog with Tumblr. You can now be a video blogger on Blogger.com.  If you like a Facebook “page” can be the the public platform of choice for expressing yourself. If you want to  keep it short and sweet then Twitter is the micro bloggers paradise. We all don’t have to write 1,000 words epiphanies.

There is something to be said for keeping it simple and succinct.
